Continual, repetitious cycles of wetting and drying, swelling and shrinking can cause wood to eventually crack and check, or worse, split, cup or warp – all of which cause wood damage and extensive repair. All exterior wood needs protection from the morning dew, rainwater, melting ice and snow which are quickly absorbed by unprotected wood, causing it to soften and swell. Once your installation of a deck, fence, pier or other wood structure is finished being build is the day that many troubles can start. You need to have a stain or sealer applied to it. Constant exposure to the grueling hot temperatures from the sun causes wood to dry out and contract. Surface degradation caused by direct exposure to the sun’s damaging, ultra-violet rays is a common occurrence on decks, docks, fences and other outdoor wood structures. After unfailing sun exposure over years, the result is usually surface “graying.” Termites and other wood boring insects also can inflict mayhem on wood that is not pressure treated.
